Wow! The holidays are here. Thanksgiving has just passed. It is Christmas time again. We are not quite ready with all that we have planned, but we are getting there. TNT Sparring Gear

In this post, we will have a quick look at all of the new Bold Look TNT sparring gear.

I begin by focusing on the features that all of the TNT Gear have in common. All of the TNT Gear is made of foam that has been dipped and covered in vinyl. In my role as the Operations Manager of Martial Arts Supplies 4 Less, my job is to ensure that the business functions as smoothly as possible. I write the processes, train the support staff, and I address our tech needs. I visit martial arts supply houses and I find better priced martial arts supplies. As a last result, I also help with customer service issues. Of course, the more activities that there are and the more people that are involved, the more there is that can go awry. Martial Arts Supplies 4 Less at www.mas4less.com now exclusively sells Bold Look Martial Arts Products only. Since we have fully committed this website to Bold Look gear, we have a lot of work cut out for us. Now, we will be adding new Bold Look products to our site regularly. We literally have hundreds of products to add over the course of the next year, so please bear with us. If there is something that you do not see on our website, ask us. We probably have it, but we haven't added it yet.

For example, we have several types of weapons to add to our site. We have more than 10 different types of belts. There are still more traditional karate gis, tae kwon do doboks, kung fu uniforms, hapkido doboks, and more to add to our site. Oh, and we can't forget about uniform patches. We have so many of them that we will focus on everything else first.

You will also notice that we have removed most of other brands. Our Adidas, Masterline, Golden Tiger and Macho Products will no longer be available from this website. How Old Should a Child Be to Learn a Martial Art?

As an instructor, I have been asked this question repeatedly during my 20-plus years of martial arts experience. The answer to this question cannot simply be answered by a standard age answer like say 3,5 or 8 years old. Although most schools accept children when they are school-aged, many instructors will take on preschoolers. Many times, parents of preschoolers are eager to get their child involved in activities to burn off extra energy. They also hope to instill in their child many of the interpersonal skills that the martial arts often provide. Instructors realize that this is a highly motivated age demographic therefore they are willing to take on preschoolers. But in my opinion the answer to this question is dependent upon several factors.

1) Probably the best test for the appropriate age of a child to begin martial arts training is to check the child's attention span and ability to focus. Although these skills are to be improved while training in the martial arts, many times a child at three years old will appear to have the ability to physically participate, however, the child might often have difficulty focusing for the long periods of time required in a martial arts class. Having a good ability to remain focused on the instruction is a good prerequisite.

2) In my experience, a preschool-aged child who has experience learning from other instructors and teachers is an excellent candidate. Three and 4 year olds who attend preschool and other extracurricular activities usually make good students because these preschoolers are less likely to have separation anxiety from their parents, and will readily participate in classes. They will better understand how to follow rules especially when instituted by those other than their parents and care-givers.

3) Potty training is an important factor. A child should be completely potty-trained when participating in martial arts activities - unless they are enrolled in parent participation "Mommy and Me" type classes. The potty-trained child will not be a distraction to the instructor nor to the other students. I have personally witnessed the distraction and humiliation suffered by a five year old boy who had issues with his body function control. The parents decided that their child would be a better participant when he could control the accidents, and we agreed.

4) Will the child be able to control their temper to prevent using the skills learned on others? Preschoolers are learning to control their temper and their urges to strike out in frustration. A martial art student must be old enough for example, to understand that they are not to use their skills to strike their sibling who has taken a doll from them.

5) In my experience, a preschooler with older siblings is often more prepared to take instruction from a martial arts instructor. These preschool students have had the opportunity to watch how their older sibling(s) take instruction from others. This is especially true if the older siblings are enrolled in the martial arts classes also. This makes them better prepared for lessons.

Other factors to consider as to how old a child should be to learn a martial art have less to do with the child, and more to do with the instruction. All instructors are not created equally. I have always cautioned parents that styles don't really matter nearly as much as the instruction. In fact, these are the tips that parents wishing to involve their youngster in martial arts should consider, especially when deciding if their child is old enough to participate.

1) The instruction should be age appropriate. It is not the best idea for instructors to put most weapons in the hands of new students, especially if the student is a preschooler.

2) The skill level of the instructor working with younger students. Parents should watch the instruction with their child prior to participating. The parents can then observe whether or not the instruction will be appropriate for their child. Also, they should think of the instructor in this way, "Would this person make a good school teacher? If so, then they will probably be a good person for my child to learn from."

3) What are the age levels and skill levels of the students in the class that my child will participate in. Will this benefit or hinder the development of my child? Will my 4 year old beginner benefit by being in the same class as a 10 year old blue belt?

4) What is the class size in relation to the number of instructors in the class where my child child will begin participation? The teacher to student ratio should be lower for beginners. I suggest 1-3 new students per instructor for first time preschool-six year olds (students in their first class working with one instructor).

In conclusion, school-aged children as a whole are probably ready to begin training in martial arts. However, when a martial arts studio is professionally staffed with several instructors, many schools and/or instructors will accept students as young as 3 or 4 years old. Parents should consider five things to see if their child is ready to visit a martial arts studio: 1) their child's attention span, 2) their experiences with other authority figures, 3) potty training, 4) temper control, 5) have older siblings influenced the maturity of the child.

During my 18 years of instructing taekwon-do, I've seen several 3 year old students who were better prepared for martial arts training and made better students than 5 year olds. But I have had many more preschoolers who were not ready for classes even after participating in a week long beginner's trial program. In fact, for the younger children, I suggest that parents begin lessons on a trial period over several classes rather than one trial lesson. Finally, I would urge parents to consider the suggestions I have made above to help them decide if their preschooler is ready to participate in martial arts.
